Additionally, an Addiction Psychiatrist has specialty training enabling them to better diagnosis and treat substance use disorders in patients with or without co-occurring mental illness.

Dr. Goldenberg’s medical training consisted of four years of medical school, followed by four years of Psychiatry Residency and one year of Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship training. The general medical training, including a year of internship (rotating through internal medicine, surgical, emergency medicine and pediatric specialties), helps Addiction Psychiatrists to better understand the biological and medical aspects of mental health and addiction.A final year of training for Dr. Goldenberg consisted of an Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at UCLA San Fernando Valley. In this capacity he evaluated and treated patients with mental health concerns and/or addiction(s) at the West Los Angeles and Sepulveda Veteran Administration Hospitals and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Prior to the Fellowship, Dr. Goldenberg completed Residency Training in Psychiatry at Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix Campus (formerly Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center), a nationally recognized academic medical center, in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Goldenberg’s training consisted of working with patients in acute inpatient psychiatric hospitals and also in a consult-liaison capacity with hospitalized patients within the Level 1 Trauma Center. Additionally, Dr. Goldenberg maintained an active outpatient practice within the Department of Psychiatry. The four years of Psychiatry Residency, after medical school, prepared Dr. Goldenberg to utilize a comprehensive biological, psychological and social approach. By targeting the environmental, genetic and psychological aspects of his patients’ lives, he can better help them to optimize their lives in the critical areas of love, work and play. In short, this has led Dr. Goldenberg to utilize a patient specific and evidence-based approach which may incorporate psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, targeted environmental enhancements and other emerging treatment modalities.
