Dr. Maryam Akbar is a licensed Clinical Psychologist who has worked with individuals and families. Dr. Akbar has an extensive background and training in providing psychotherapy, assessment, psychological testing, skills training, and crisis management.  Dr. Akbar is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), New School University, and California School of Professional Psychology. She has treated clients for issues such as depression and anxiety as well as problems related to self-esteem, poor communication skills, complex trauma, poor coping skills, and stress management. She specializes in dealing with co-occuring disorders, and psychotic disorders. Dr. Akbar specializes in the treatment of major mental illness and has had a lot of success working with clinical populations of high acuity. She is routinely called upon to conduct harm assessments and crisis stabilization.

Dr. Akbar has extensive training working with clients in a variety of settings including outpatient (OP), intensive outpatient (IOP), Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and Inpatient. Aside from working in a private practice, Dr. Akbar’s professional experience includes working for LA County Department of Mental Health as Staff Psychologist for many years. Dr. Akbar has worked as Research Assistant at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute as well as UCLA’s Medical Center. Dr. Akbar is passionate about teaching and mentoring while keeping up to date about the latest research in the field of psychology. Dr. Akbar has mentored and provided clinical supervision to interns and trainees at various settings. She has also worked as a psychologist for the Foundations Recovery Network providing individual, group, and family therapy for those seeking recovery. Dr. Akbar has worked as a consultant to numerous public and private agencies including school districts, the regional centers, and treatment facilities. She has worked at crisis stabilization units as well as substance abuse treatment programs helping individuals seeking recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. As a result, Dr. Akbar is very skilled working with dual diagnosis populations and understands how to accurately diagnose and treat co-occurring disorders.
