Maryam Akbar, PhD

Chief Operational Officer

Dr. Maryam Akbar is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with individuals and families across a range of clinical settings. She provides psychotherapy, psychological assessment, testing, skills training, and crisis management, and is known for her compassionate and practical approach to treatment.

Dr. Akbar holds degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)New School University, and the California School of Professional Psychology. Her clinical expertise includes treating depression, anxiety, self-esteem challenges, communication difficulties, trauma, and stress-related disorders. She also specializes in co-occurring disorders, psychotic disorders, and major mental illness, and has extensive experience working with high-acuity clinical populations. Dr. Akbar is frequently consulted for harm assessments and crisis stabilization.

Professional Experience

Dr. Akbar has worked in a variety of clinical environments, including Outpatient (OP)Intensive Outpatient (IOP)Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and Inpatient settings. In addition to her private practice work, she served for many years as a Staff Psychologist for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

Her early career included research positions at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute and UCLA Medical Center, where she deepened her understanding of the intersection between neuroscience and clinical psychology.

Dr. Akbar has also provided clinical supervision and mentorship to interns and trainees at multiple institutions, reflecting her commitment to training the next generation of mental health professionals.

Consultation & Community Work

Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Akbar has served as a consultant to numerous public and private organizations, including school districtsregional centers, and treatment facilities. She has contributed her expertise to crisis stabilization units and substance abuse programs, helping clients achieve recovery from addiction and rebuild healthy, meaningful lives.

Her depth of experience with dual-diagnosis populations allows her to accurately assess and effectively treat individuals with both mental health and substance use disorders, offering truly integrated care.
